Ghana is intensifying its commitment to Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as a strategic approach to address climate change and environmental degradation. In a recent high-level policy dialogue in Accra, stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, and international organizations convened to discuss mainstreaming NbS into national development planning and budgeting. The initiative, organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in collaboration with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC), emphasized the importance of sustainable ecosystem management in achieving Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, highlighted the government’s dedication to integrating NbS into policies such as the National Land Policy and the National Climate Change Policy. Efforts like the Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative aim to restore millions of hectares of forest, enhancing biodiversity and supporting local livelihoods. The Forestry Commission, managing approximately 3.6 million hectares of forest reserves, plays a pivotal role in implementing these solutions to bolster climate resilience and sustainable development.
