– Sustainable Livestock and Aquaculture in Africa
– Climate-Resilient Food Systems in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
– Empowering Smallholder Farmers through Innovation
The CGIAR has launched the Sustainable Animal and Aquatic Foods (SAAF) program, aiming to transform livestock and aquaculture systems across 17 countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and Bangladesh. The initiative seeks to reach over 1.7 million people through 18 targeted projects, focusing on improving productivity via genetics and animal health, advancing regenerative aquaculture, and promoting low-emission livestock systems. SAAF also emphasizes the One Health approach, ensuring food production is safe for people, animals, and ecosystems, while expanding opportunities for women and youth across value chains.
Leveraging digital innovations like AI and blockchain, SAAF aims to drive smart farming decisions and support inclusive, data-driven markets for smallholder producers. The program plans to unlock $84 million in funding, collaborating with national governments, universities, NGOs, and private sector actors to boost national capacities through technical support and innovation hubs. By integrating research, policy, and private sector action, SAAF aspires to create climate-resilient, inclusive, and nutrition-driven food systems in low- and middle-income countries.
