Nigeria Energy Transition 2025
On February 27, 2025, the Nigerian government introduced the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and the Integrated Resources Plan (NIRP) to advance the nation’s energy transition objectives. Developed by the Ministry of Power in collaboration with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the UK Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (UKNIAF), these frameworks aim to provide a strategic, evidence-based roadmap for achieving universal electrification and optimizing energy resource utilization. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized that the NIEP and NIRP are designed to foster a sustainable and inclusive power sector, directly impacting economic growth, job creation, and the reliability of electricity supply for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large industries.
These initiatives align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, recognizing energy as the backbone of economic development. In 2024, under this agenda, Nigeria’s power sector saw significant milestones, including over $1 billion in investments and an increase in average power generation from 4,200 MW in 2023 to approximately 5,300 MW. The NIEP and NIRP are expected to further enhance these achievements by closing transmission and distribution gaps, developing hydropower, and integrating large-scale renewable energy sources into the national grid.
