Nigeria Climate Action Index
State and LGA Climate Initiatives
BPSR Climate Monitoring
On February 26, 2025, the Nigerian Federal Government, in collaboration with civil society organizations (CSOs), introduced the Climate Action Index (CAI) to assess and rank climate change initiatives at state and local government levels. The Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), alongside the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity (CeFTPI) and the Centre for Climate Action, Innovation and Engagement (CCAIE), organized a stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja to unveil this initiative. BPSR Director-General, Dasuki Arabi, emphasized that the CAI aims to drive accountability, encourage healthy competition, and highlight best practices across Nigeria’s subnational entities. The index will evaluate efforts based on three key pillars outlined in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) framework: mitigation, adaptation, and financing. This collaborative effort underscores Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and the Climate Change Act of 2021, ensuring that climate actions are transparent, measurable, and impactful at all governmental levels.
