– Environment Ministry Taps Agencies’ Boards to Lead Policy and Enforcement
– Blessing or Burden? New Governing Boards Key to Tackling Urbanisation, Biodiversity Loss
– Alignment with National Goals, NDCs, and SDGs Central to Nigeria’s Green Vision
At the inauguration of governing boards for seven key environmental agencies, Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, emphasized that the nation’s environmental sector now demands broad-based collaboration—including international partners, federal and state stakeholders—to ensure effective governance. He identified critical challenges such as rapid urbanisation, resource depletion, poor waste management, desertification, recurrent flooding, biodiversity loss, and climate change, stating that the newly appointed boards must tackle them through sound policymaking, robust data systems, and stronger regulatory enforcement. These boards, he said, are pivotal institutional anchors for Nigeria’s domestic and global environmental obligations.
Echoing the minister’s vision, Permanent Secretary Mahmud Kambari tasked the boards with fostering seamless inter-agency collaboration and ensuring that policies are aligned with frameworks like the National Environmental Policy, revised NDCs under the Paris Agreement, and Nigeria’s **Green Economy Strategy. He urged the boards to deliver measurable outcomes in line with national development priorities and critical Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
