- Nigeria’s Ebola preparedness measures
- Uganda’s Sudan strain Ebola outbreak
- NCDC’s response to Ebola threat
In light of the recent confirmation of an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Uganda, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has raised the nation’s alert status to curb potential spread. Consequently, NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris stated that, although no cases have been reported in Nigeria, proactive measures are being implemented.
Specifically, the EVD emergency contingency plan is being updated, screening at international airports is being enhanced, and diagnostic capacities in designated laboratories are being optimized. Moreover, Lassa fever testing facilities are being prepared for possible Ebola testing.
The outbreak in Uganda, caused by the Sudan strain of the virus, was officially confirmed on January 30, 2025. One case and one fatality have been recorded in regions such as Wakiso, Mukono, and Mbale City. As a result, Ugandan health authorities are closely monitoring 44 contacts to prevent further transmission. Furthermore, Dr. Idris highlighted the absence of an approved vaccine for the Sudan strain, reinforcing the urgency of early detection and containment.
To minimize risks, Nigerians have been advised to maintain good hand hygiene, avoid contact with symptomatic individuals, and refrain from consuming bushmeat, particularly bats and primates. In addition, travelers returning from affected areas within the past 21 days should seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
Meanwhile, healthcare workers are urged to remain vigilant, use personal protective equipment (PPE), and promptly report suspected cases.
Although the World Health Organization has not imposed travel restrictions, Nigerians have been cautioned against non-essential travel to affected countries. In the meantime, the NCDC continues to strengthen surveillance and response efforts nationwide to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. Lastly, the public is encouraged to stay updated through official NCDC channels and follow all recommended preventive measures.
