Companion planting, a technique where different crops are planted close together, can significantly boost garden productivity. This strategy, utilized worldwide, helps with weed suppression, pest control, and maximizing space.
Companion planting offers numerous benefits including improved soil health, enhanced pest control, and support for pollination. This method, often used by smallholder farmers in both developed and developing countries, enhances plant biodiversity and overall crop yield.
In my own smallholder farming experience, I recently integrated plantains with cassava. However, I made a critical error in planting both simultaneously. The plantains, which should have been established first to avoid interference from the faster-growing cassava, struggled and failed to thrive.
Key lessons learned from this experience are:
