The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is urging Nigerians to promptly report environmental violations, particularly noise pollution, to the agency. Dr. Innocent Barikor, NESREA’s Director-General, emphasized the importance of adhering to environmental laws and regulations, warning that the agency will take action against violators.

Barikor highlighted that NESREA has received and addressed numerous complaints about noise pollution from various sources, including places of worship, nightclubs, social gardens, power generators, and musical shops, both within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and across other states. He noted that these complaints were investigated and resolved accordingly.

The National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, 2009, outline the maximum permissible noise levels for various activities. For instance, Regulation 5 (1) prohibits any person from emitting noise that disturbs the neighborhood for more than two minutes or during prohibited times in residential areas or designated Noise Control Zones.

Barikor also pointed out that the regulations address noise pollution caused by activities such as the use of power bikes at night, noise from places of worship, marketplaces, and sales promotions using public address systems. Facilities found guilty of non-compliance have been sanctioned as provided in the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations 2009, following several notifications to abate noise pollution.

To effectively carry out its mandate, NESREA enforces the provisions of 35 National Environmental Regulations addressing various environmental issues. The agency focuses its regulatory work on individuals or organizations whose activities pose threats to the environment. The National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations 2009 aim to ensure that citizens have access to a quiet environment, setting noise limits for different places and times.

NESREA encourages the public to respect environmental laws and promptly report any violations to help maintain a healthier and more peaceful environment.
