Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has called for the adoption of conventional mining methods. This appeal follows a recent dynamite explosion in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area, which caused significant casualties and property damage.

During his visit to the explosion site, Governor Bago highlighted the dangers of illegal and artisanal mining practices. These practices have led to environmental degradation, such as water pollution and soil erosion, as well as health issues, including lead poisoning and kidney failure among miners. He urged miners to surrender explosives and hazardous materials to a committee. This committee will include security agencies, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, traditional institutions, and other stakeholders for safe storage.

In response to the explosion, the state government has announced a ₦174 million donation to the victims. The funds will be distributed as follows: ₦5 million for those whose houses were completely destroyed, ₦2 million for those with partially damaged homes, ₦1 million for the injured, ₦2 million for the families of the deceased, and ₦1 million for those whose vehicles were affected. A committee will be formed to oversee the proper distribution of the funds.

Governor Bago’s initiatives are aimed at promoting responsible mining practices. They also seek to protect the environment and ensure the health and safety of both miners and local communities.
