Enugu State has made history by approving the Enugu State Climate Policy and Action Plan (ESCPAP). This marks a bold step toward sustainable economic growth and environmental resilience. Governor Peter Mbah’s administration aims to raise the state’s GDP from $4.4 billion in 2023 to $30 billion by 2031. The focus remains on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green technology.

Importantly, the ESCPAP introduces long-term strategies such as emissions modeling, microenergy audits, and renewable energy targets. These initiatives set a benchmark for subnational climate governance in Nigeria. Furthermore, the plan is expected to create over 792,000 new jobs in sectors like renewable energy, waste management, and afforestation.

Key highlights of the plan include:

  • Renewable Energy: The state aims to achieve 80% clean energy adoption by 2060.
  • Emissions Reduction: It targets a 60% reduction in transport emissions.
  • Job Creation: Nearly 800,000 jobs will emerge in green industries.
  • Education: A climate change curriculum will empower students in Smart Green Schools.

Moreover, this policy aligns with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and global climate agreements. Therefore, Enugu positions itself as a leader in climate resilience and sustainability.

To ensure proper execution, a committee will oversee the implementation. This group includes representatives from the government, private sector, and civil society. The African and European Climate Foundations have provided funding to support this effort.

With its innovative strategies, Enugu demonstrates that economic growth and environmental sustainability can coexist. The plan’s unveiling will occur soon, signaling the beginning of a transformative era for the state.
