The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has officially validated its National Biosafety Guidelines on Low-Level Presence (LLP) to ensure the safe importation of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) into Nigeria.

Speaking on January 22, 2025, in Abuja, NBMA Director-General, Dr. Agnes Asagbra, reiterated the agency’s dedication to protecting human health, animals, plants, and the environment. “We conduct rigorous assessments to ensure GMOs are safe for consumption. Only certified seeds or grains will be accepted in Nigeria,” she stated.

The newly validated guidelines mandate thorough analysis and approval of all GMO imports. Dr. Asagbra clarified that LLP is a trade standard ensuring GMOs have passed basic risk assessments in other countries before entering Nigeria.

“LLP is not a safety issue but a trade requirement to regulate GMO imports,” she explained.

Mrs. Modupe Adeyemo, Senior Programme Officer at AUDA-NEPAD, praised the initiative and pledged support for implementing the guidelines.

The NBMA’s proactive measures aim to enhance biosafety, ensuring only safe and approved GMOs contribute to Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
