The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled the Global Environment Facility-Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (GEF-CBIT) project to enhance transparency in reporting climate action. The launch took place on January 16, 2025, during an inception workshop in Abuja.
The workshop, themed “Strengthening the Capacity of Institutions in Nigeria to Implement the Transparency Requirements of the Paris Agreement,” aimed to sensitise key stakeholders on the initiative.
Mr. Mahmud Kambari, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, represented by Dr. Ama Moses, highlighted that the project aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Agreement. It aims to strengthen institutional and technical capacity for managing greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, Measuring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems, and tracking the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The GEF-funded initiative will help Nigeria meet the enhanced transparency standards under Article 13 of the Paris Agreement. These standards mandate regular monitoring and reporting of GHG emissions, mitigation progress, and climate adaptation efforts.
Dr. Adesoji Adeyemi, FAO National Consultant, GHG and MRV, noted that the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is committed to supporting Nigeria with capacity-building to ensure self-sufficiency in data management and reporting. He emphasized FAO’s alignment with UNFCCC objectives, which focus on climate mitigation and sustainable agri-food systems.
This project is a pivotal step in Nigeria’s journey towards fulfilling its climate obligations and achieving transparency in environmental governance.
