At the 5th Africa TB Summit in Abuja, stakeholders including parliamentarians, civil society organizations, and health experts committed to ending tuberculosis (TB) across the continent by 2030. Hosted on January 14, 2025, by the Global TB Caucus and its partners, the summit highlighted key strategies for accelerating TB eradication efforts in Africa.
The summit focused on advancing the goals set during the 2023 UN High-Level Meeting on TB. Participants discussed funding, legislative engagement, and policy reforms to tackle TB. A key outcome was the adoption of the Abuja Statement on Financing to End TB, which outlines a roadmap for achieving TB targets through increased investments, resource mobilization, and partnerships.
Speakers underscored the importance of domestic funding and policy reforms in TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Nigeria’s Amobi Ogah emphasized that parliamentarians play a crucial role in turning commitments into action. The Global Fund’s Peter Sands highlighted Africa’s progress in reducing TB deaths but stressed the need for continued investment in diagnostics and treatments.
The summit concluded with resolutions to strengthen multi-sectoral partnerships and prioritize vulnerable communities in TB care. African nations reaffirmed their commitment to ending TB by 2030 through collaborative efforts and innovative strategies.
