Strengthening Nigeria’s Health System: Tinubu’s Vision
BY SHEKWOPEYELO
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is taking steps to enhance healthcare in Nigeria. He is investing in a new generation of leaders with strong academic and practical skills. Among them is Dr. Muyi Aina, the Executive Director and CEO of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). With over 20 years of experience in public health, Dr. Aina has played a key role in successful health initiatives, including HIV/AIDS care in multiple countries.
Despite his expertise, Dr. Aina faces challenges in Nigeria’s public health delivery system. He emphasizes the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical realities. Many Nigerians question the effectiveness of the country’s over 30,000 primary healthcare centers.
Dr. Aina expresses optimism about President Tinubu’s commitment to healthcare reform. He highlights the administration’s goal to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. A comprehensive blueprint has been developed under the leadership of Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate. This blueprint aims to enhance the quality of primary healthcare, increase health insurance coverage, and strengthen local production of health commodities.
Dr. Aina reports significant progress. To date, 239 primary healthcare centers have been revitalized. Plans are underway to address an additional 2,500 to 3,000 facilities. He urges the public to remain patient and engaged, noting that repairing a damaged healthcare system takes time and collective effort.
Through initiatives to improve transparency and accountability in healthcare funding, Dr. Aina is committed to fostering a more effective health system in Nigeria. He encourages Nigerians to trust the government’s intentions. He also asks them to participate in health programs, emphasizing the need for public support for meaningful reform.
