– Sanitary Inspectors Reintroduced Across Abia’s 17 LGAs with Fair Compensation
– Trees to Be Planted Statewide as Part of Flood Prevention & Green Initiative
– Government Emphasizes Clean Surroundings, Responsiveness Over Punishment
The Abia State Government has relaunched door-to-door sanitary inspections of homes, villages, and communities across all 17 local government areas, clarifying that the programme is about cleanliness and public health—not taxation or punitive measures. Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, announced on September 15, 2025, that sanitary inspectors will be paid stipends to encourage professionalism and discourage corruption during inspections of compounds. Communities are to receive a week’s notice before visits to allow adequate preparation. The move aims to reduce disease incidence, especially from dirty surroundings, and to foster greater public compliance with health directives.
Alongside sanitary inspections, Abia has approved a wide-ranging **tree-planting campaign** to enhance environmental health and resilience. Efforts are also underway to de-silt drains in Aba and Umuahia in light of flood warnings, with authorities calling on residents to avoid blocking drainage channels and dispose of waste responsibly. Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) is involved in carrying out the sanitation work and environmental education.
