The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has entered a strategic collaboration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN)** to enhance disaster preparedness through stronger engineering oversight. Acting FEMD Director-General, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, emphasized that when engineering systems fail—be it roads, refineries, dams, or tanker infrastructure—disasters ensue. He flagged critical hazards such as overloaded petrol tankers and the lack of weigh-in bridges, calling upon COREN to incorporate FEMD’s emergency needs into its Engineering Regulations Monitoring (ERM) framework to help prevent such tragedies.

In response, COREN Registrar Prof. Okorie Uche affirmed the council’s commitment to supporting FEMD by embedding public health and environmental safety into its technical guidelines. Highlighting that petrol tanker explosions are largely preventable with proper safety protocols, he reiterated the importance of joint regulation and technical collaboration to safeguard lives and infrastructure in Abuja’s ever-expanding urban landscape.
