In the lead-up to World Decarbonisation Day (WDD) 2025 on September 3–4 in Abuja, Women in Oil and Gas (WEOG) convened a pre-WDD webinar on August 5 in Lagos to emphasize the power of climate storytelling in advancing decarbonisation. WEOG National President Tolu Longe stressed that the climate conversation must be honest, bold, and inclusive—it’s not just about technical fixes or foreign models, but about human stories that resonate. She urged the media to shift the narrative from fear to opportunity, and to help the public understand why climate action matters to everyone. WEOG’s Future Energy, Renewable & Climate Action Committee (FERCA) reaffirmed its leadership role in Nigeria’s energy transition, while WDD Chairperson Toyin Yusuf reminded stakeholders that, despite our dependency on fossil fuels, Nigeria has solutions—like nature-based technologies—that can steer the country from being climate victims to climate leaders.

Environmentalist Desmond Majekodunmi highlighted a critical point: climate action is a shared responsibility that requires truth-telling through journalism and engagement from religious leaders, given the urgency of the climate tipping point. Climate communicator Olumide Idowu added that mass media plays a foundational role in bridging innovation and tangible action, arguing, “decarbonisation begins with awareness,” and reminding us that only informed storytelling can influence behaviors and policy. The upcoming WDD summit in Abuja, expected to host over 3,000 stakeholders, aims to showcase Africa’s leadership in global decarbonisation and elevate inclusive climate narratives to national prominence.
