A continent-wide campaign—the Africa Week of Action to Kick Total Out of Africa—has erupted with demonstrations in at least 10 African countries, including Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Benin, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Togo, and the DRC. Communities directly impacted by TotalEnergies-led oil and gas projects are demanding the company withdraw its operations, fund reparations, and support a just transition to renewable energy. The campaign leverages protests, community tribunals, symbolic sporting events, webinars, and digital actions to amplify its message.
In Nigeria’s Ogbogu community (Rivers State), affected residents held town hall meetings to denounce TotalEnergies for long-standing neglect, environmental degradation, and unfulfilled promises tied to its OML 58 operations. Community leaders condemned tactics perceived as manipulative and demanded environmental cleanup, full compensation, and stronger government oversight.
Furthermore, international human rights and environmental watchdogs—including Global Witness and StopEACOP coalition—have documented widespread intimidation, harassment, and legal pressure against communities opposing TotalEnergies projects in Uganda and Tanzania. In several instances, activists allege collusion between TotalEnergies and security agencies in undermining dissent.
