The Delta State Government has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to tackle the pressing electricity access gap in the region. With over 60% of Delta’s communities currently off-grid, the partnership aims to deliver 120,217 new power connections, reaching 386,046 residents through clean, sustainable off-grid systems such as solar and wind-powered mini-grids. Expected to attract approximately $158 million in private sector investment, the initiative will also catalyze socioeconomic development—potentially doubling the state GDP to $2.9 billion.

REA’s Managing Director, Engr. Abba Aliyu, revealed that 471 potential mini-grid sites have been identified across Delta, notably with Ndokwa East hosting over 83 locations. Given the high connection density—where an average village can support around 255 connections—these projects could power over 120,000 buildings, while boosting job creation by 31,000 roles. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori affirmed the alignment of the MoU with Delta’s “MORE Agenda” and medium-term development plan (2024–2027). He also highlighted the construction of an 8.5 MW independent power plant in Asaba to supply electricity to vital government institutions.
