A recent analysis by Environmental Action Germany (DUH) reveals that the official cars of German political leaders often emit more CO₂ than the average citizen’s vehicle, calling into question their commitment to climate targets. The study found that among 238 top officials assessed, just 87 use electric vehicles, with the rest relying on heavily polluting plug-in hybrids presumed to run primarily in combustion mode—further raising carbon output.

Despite a minor increase in EV usage among federal-level officials (from 50 % to 57 %), four out of 11 federal ministers still drive plug-in hybrids, and armored luxury vehicles such as the Chancellor’s are excluded from emissions analysis due to their weight—highlighting inconsistencies in official mobility compared to climate objectives.
