The Lagos State Government has stepped up efforts to protect its vulnerable shoreline and coastal infrastructure—including the Lagos–Calabar Highway—by expanding the deployment of groyne technology, rigid hydraulic structures designed to interrupt wave energy and curb sediment loss to erosion. These interventions are central to preserving vital transport corridors and coastal communities at risk.

Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, revealed that Lagos is considering partnerships across government and the private sector—potentially structured as public-private partnerships (PPPs)—to fund the large-scale coastal protection required, with initial estimates suggesting a total cost exceeding ₦3 trillion. Emphasizing best practices, he noted that a recent high-level delegation visited the Netherlands to study the integrative approach of combining groynes, sand nourishment, and nature-based solutions—a model Lagos aims to adapt to its own shoreline realities.
