Stakeholders across Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States are advancing preparations to protect communities at risk of flooding this rainy season. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Uyo office has completed flood-prone area assessments and rolled out a National Preparedness Campaign. Activities include drain desilting, public sensitisation on evacuation readiness, and relief distributions in areas recently impacted by storms. Aisueni, NEMA’s Head of Operations, confirmed joint planning with state governments and that evacuation readiness reports will inform immediate action through their State Emergency Management Agencies.
In Akwa Ibom, the state has teamed up with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to enhance waste management—with added receptacle bins to prevent drain blockages—alongside awareness campaigns and an enforcement task force targeting improper waste disposal. Meanwhile, in Rivers and Bayelsa, NEMA reports a striking 90% preparedness level, supported by early warning systems, extensive flood drills, IDP camp planning, and coordination with emergency services, including the military.
