Many traders in markets like Ikosi-Ketu and Lawanson remain unaware of the full scope of the ban—particularly on items such as plastic cups, cutlery, and nylon bags under 40 microns in thickness—and are still using them for packaging and food service. Evicting stock remains economically unviable for many, highlighting both lack of effective communication and practical alternatives.
Critics argue that rapid enforcement without adequate transition support may worsen livelihoods. Waste pickers and traders point to insufficient awareness campaigns, lack of affordable alternatives, and minimal stakeholder engagement—calling instead for a phased approach that balances environmental goals with socio-economic realities.
