The Gates Foundation on August 4, 2025 unveiled a landmark $2.5 billion commitment through 2030 to accelerate research and development exclusively focused on women’s health. The investment will target over 40 innovations addressing chronically underfunded areas—especially in obstetric care and maternal immunisation, maternal nutrition, gynecological and menstrual health, contraceptive innovation, and sexually transmitted infections like HIV prevention tailored for women.
Dr. Anita Zaidi, President of the Foundation’s Gender Equality Division, emphasized that women’s health has long been neglected, misunderstood, and under-researched. With only 1% of non-cancer healthcare R&D historically dedicated to female-specific conditions, this initiative aims to reshape global priorities and spark a new era of women‑centred innovation, urging governments and private sector actors to co-invest and help ensure equitable access to breakthroughs.
