Nigeria’s federal government has reaffirmed its dedication to expanding clean cooking access through its Decade of Gas Initiative, which aims to distribute five million LPG cylinders by 2030, converting roughly one million households annually across the country. The program seeks to reduce health risks from biomass fuel use, particularly affecting women and children, combat deforestation, and stimulate economic empowerment via growth in the LPG value chain.
High-level officials—including Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Dr. Ekperikpe Ekpo and NNPC Group Managing Director Bashir Ojulari—emphasized that providing a cooking gas cylinder in every Nigerian home is central to Nigeria’s energy transition strategy. These efforts are part of broader goals under Nigeria’s National Clean Cooking Policy and 2022 Energy Transition Plan to ensure clean cooking fuels (especially LPG) reach nearly half of households by 2030 and reduce reliance on traditional biomass.
