Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially inaugurated a large-scale tree planting initiative at Yanbawa Shelterbelt in Makoda LGA, marking the launch of a Five Million Tree Planting Campaign. The initiative, part of Kano’s newly released climate change policy, aims to distribute locally produced seedlings across all 44 local government areas—including schools, places of worship, farms, public spaces, and homes—to combat desertification, restore ecosystems, and enhance environmental sustainability across the state.
Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of not only planting but also nurturing and protecting the trees. Each LGA is mandated to set up monitoring committees to oversee seedling survival, watering, and maintenance. The seedlings are sourced from state-run nurseries revived under the ACReSAL project, ensuring local and sustainable production for long-term impact.
