As World Ranger Day 2025 is observed, conservation NGO Wild Africa has issued a powerful appeal for better support for the continent’s nearly 60,000 frontline wildlife rangers who face increasingly dangerous conditions to conserve biodiversity and ecosystems. Under the theme “Rangers: Powering Transformative Conservation”, the organisation honoured the courage and sacrifice of rangers, many of whom also serve as community educators, first responders, and ecosystem managers. With Africa’s ranger numbers currently well below the estimated 1.5 million needed to meet global biodiversity and climate targets, insufficient staffing, training, and welfare were identified as barriers to effective conservation.

Wild Africa’s West Africa Director, Linus Unah, described rangers as “nature’s first line of defense,” responsible for safeguarding iconic species such as lions, elephants, gorillas, and leopards. The NGO underscored that despite the essential role rangers play, many operate without adequate remuneration, protection, or recognition. The organisation called on governments, donors, and the private sector to step up investment in training, insurance coverage, safety gear, mental health services, and long-term professional pathways for rangers. The call aligns with broader campaigns like the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, a multi-country initiative which has raised over US $21 million since 2020 to support ranger welfare and resilience across Africa.
