Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has unequivocally denied responsibility for recent oil spill allegations, including claims in Bayelsa’s Abiteye, Makaraba, and Utonana fields. In a statement issued by GM of Policy, Government, and Public Affairs, Esimaje Brikinn, the company affirmed that joint investigation visits (JIVs) conducted with regulators—such as NOSDRA and the Department of Petroleum Resources—found no indications of a spill originating from Chevron assets in those areas. CNL stressed its ongoing surveillance operations and readiness to respond to all reported incidents in strict compliance with environmental laws.
Despite Chevron’s denial, environmental and community groups—including CAPPA and ERA/FoEN—have raised alarm over a new oil leak near Ilaje, Ondo State, describing it as part of a “pattern of environmental negligence” that threatens local ecosystems and livelihoods of fishing and farming communities. These groups have called on Chevron to immediately halt the leak, clean up affected areas, assess environmental and health impacts, and provide adequate compensation and remediation to affected residents.
