The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and state governments to collaborate closely in stemming the tide of engineering failures—including building collapses, power grid breakdowns, and substandard infrastructure. President Prof. Sadiq Abubakar emphasized that while COREN is working to build internal capacity and modernize its regulatory frameworks, real progress demands multi-level coordination with local authorities to ensure on-the-ground enforcement, safety inspections, and swift action against violators.

To enhance oversight, COREN has established Regional Steering Committees (RSCs) and State Technical Committees (STCs) in all states and the FCT. These bodies are tasked with proactive monitoring and enforcement, installing engineering whistleblower systems, and deploying specialized infrastructure-failure/task-force units for forensic assessments of collapse sites. COREN is also fostering partnerships with agencies like the Standards Organisation (SON) and CORBON, aiming to strengthen compliance, accreditation, and material-testing regimes across jurisdictions. The Council argues that these synergistic efforts are critical to transforming engineering regulation from a paper framework into tangible, life-saving measures across Nigeria.
