At the Nigeria International Energy Summit, Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) Managing Director Ralph Gbobo emphasized that developing robust gas infrastructure is the cornerstone for unlocking Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves for domestic use. He referenced the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) as a functional model and stressed the need for full implementation of the Network Code, alongside maintaining a stable gas network—prerequisites for enticing more investors into the gas sector. SNG’s ongoing initiatives in Rivers, Abia, Ogun, and Oyo States—delivering gas to over 140 industrial, commercial, and domestic customers—underscore Nigeria Gas’s dedication to expanding the gas grid.

Gbobo highlighted that scaling up would require cohesive efforts from regulators, upstream and downstream players, and government bodies, backed by clear policies, fiscal incentives, and investor safeguards. In Ogun State’s Agbara customer forum, Shell and regulators received feedback from more than 100 gas off-takers aimed at enhancing supply reliability and affordability. Shell’s call aligns with broader ambitions under the Petroleum Industry Act and National Energy Policy to reduce gas flaring, boost domestic gas use, support industrialisation, and deliver cleaner, cost-effective energy solutions.
