The Nigerian Association of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Practitioners (NARAP) has partnered with Sustainable Research and Action for Environmental Development (SRADeV Nigeria) and EnviroNews to spearhead Nigeria’s transition towards eco-friendly, low-global‑warming potential refrigerants and cooling technologies. Jointly they hosted a national webinar on June 12 and a capacity-building workshop targeting media professionals and CSOs, titled “The Role of the Media and CSOs in Advancing Nigeria’s Transition from ODS to Climate‑Friendly Refrigerants.” The event highlighted the urgent need for public awareness of Nigeria’s Kigali‑aligned Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phase-down regime—aiming for 67.5% HCFC reduction by 2025 and full elimination by 2030—as well as the health and environmental risks of ozone-depleting substances.

Aligned with the wider AGORA initiative, launched by UNDP, UNEP, and Nigeria’s National Ozone Office, the programme—backed by €2.4 million funding from the French Facility for Global Environment—supports replacement of obsolete refrigeration equipment with modern appliances using low-GWP refrigerants like R‑290. NARAP leaders welcomed AGORA as a breakthrough, underscoring its role in energizing market adoption, enabling blending of financial incentives, and strengthening regulatory frameworks. The initiative builds momentum for circular economy approaches, proper appliance disposal, technician certification, and community engagement—bolstered by LASEPA and other stakeholders. Together, these efforts mark a significant step toward Nigeria’s sustainable cooling transition under global climate commitments.
