In commemoration of World Refugee Day, Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) highlighted that approximately 138,154 refugees are currently hosted across 33 states and the FCT. The NHRC called on the federal and state governments to enhance protections and support services for refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, stateless persons, and internally displaced persons (IDPs), emphasizing that these individuals are victims of conflicts, disasters, and economic hardship—not perpetrators of their plight. Executive Secretary Dr. Tony Ojukwu reiterated the international theme, “Solidarity with Refugees,” urging that support go beyond words to ensure safe integration and access to education, healthcare, housing, and livelihoods.

Federal Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs, Tijani Ahmed, added that recent resettlement efforts have seen around 300 individuals relocated to a newly constructed settlement in Keffi, complete with housing, trade-skill training, security services, healthcare, and farming facilities. Backed by President Tinubu’s administration, the initiative underscores Nigeria’s pledge to fully implement the Global Compact on Refugees, with plans to expand resettlement cities, skills centers, and social integration programs
