The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is set to unveil a digital marketplace aimed at streamlining waste transactions across Nigeria. This initiative is part of NESREA’s broader strategy to promote a circular economy, where waste materials are repurposed as valuable resources, thereby reducing environmental pollution and fostering sustainable development. The platform will facilitate connections between waste generators, recyclers, and manufacturers, enhancing the efficiency of waste management and encouraging the reuse and recycling of materials.
In addition to the digital marketplace, NESREA is collaborating with various stakeholders, including the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), to convert waste into industrial resources. This partnership aims to address Nigeria’s low recycling rates and the significant economic losses due to poor waste recovery. By integrating waste pickers and informal sector participants into formal waste management systems, NESREA seeks to create green jobs, stimulate economic growth, and align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
