On September 23, 2024, Kumi Naidoo assumed the role of President of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, marking a significant step towards the global phase-out of fossil fuels. With over 30 years of experience in environmental advocacy, Naidoo aims to drive international cooperation in transitioning from fossil fuel dependency.
Naidoo, previously Executive Director of Greenpeace International, underscored the importance of justice for marginalized communities impacted by fossil fuel systems. “The Fossil Fuel Treaty represents a movement for global justice,” he stated, emphasizing the need for equitable solutions.
The fossil fuel industry poses severe health risks, contributing to more than 4.2 million premature deaths annually and undermining all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Naidoo urged for immediate action, stating, “The Treaty serves as a blueprint for a fair transition to clean energy.”
His appointment received strong support from the Initiative’s steering committee, with Tzeporah Berman, Chair and Founder, praising Naidoo’s leadership as essential for uniting nations. Alongside Co-Chair Reverend James Bhagwan, Naidoo is poised to enhance the Initiative’s impact during the upcoming UN negotiations.
The Fossil Fuel Treaty initiative aims to establish a binding global agreement to swiftly and fairly phase out fossil fuel production, aligning with the scientific consensus on climate action.
