The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and Nigeria’s Ministry of Power are urging increased private-sector investment in green hydrogen. This call was made during the opening of a two-day capacity-building workshop focused on green hydrogen opportunities in Lagos.

Temitope Dina, assistant director at the Ministry of Power, emphasized the need for collaboration to leverage green hydrogen’s potential for economic growth and environmental sustainability in West Africa. He highlighted that green hydrogen is crucial for the region’s energy transition, promising to reduce carbon emissions and diversify energy sources.

Bruno Korgo, regional coordinator for renewable energy at WASCAL, noted the ECOWAS region’s abundant renewable resources. He set ambitious targets for green hydrogen production: 0.5 million tonnes by 2030 and 10 million tonnes by 2050, stressing the importance of collaboration between governments and the private sector to achieve these goals.
