– Osun State receives multiple awards for environmental sustainability efforts
– Stakeholders convene in Ede to discuss climate finance and project development
– Governor Adeleke emphasizes commitment to climate action and innovation
Osun State has been recognized with multiple awards for its leadership in climate change action and environmental sustainability. The accolades were presented during the closing ceremony of the Pre-Africa Infrastructure, Climate Change, and Investment Summit (AICIS-2025) Stakeholders Engagement Workshop held in Ede.
The three-day workshop, conducted in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and development partners, brought together government officials, academics, civil society groups, and private sector representatives. Discussions focused on climate project development, waste-to-wealth innovation, and accessing international climate finance.
Governor Ademola Adeleke highlighted Osun’s emergence as a sub-national hub for climate action in South Western Nigeria. He noted that the state’s commitment to climate initiatives began prior to his administration, leading to the establishment of a dedicated Department of Climate Change under the Ministry of Environment and the appointment of Prof. Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe as Consultant on Climate Change and Renewable Energy.
Prof. Obuaku-Igwe has spearheaded several initiatives, including the development of a Recycling Hub aimed at promoting a circular economy and accelerating waste-to-wealth processes. She emphasized the importance of aligning local solutions with international climate finance mechanisms to attract investments for scalable, high-impact projects.
The workshop concluded with a communique outlining key resolutions, such as enhancing public-private partnerships, building capacity for Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems at the state level, and submitting bankable climate proposals to the Green Climate Fund by the fourth quarter of 2025.
