Botswana and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have reaffirmed their strategic partnership to accelerate the country’s transition towards a private sector-led economy. During a high-level meeting on April 15, 2025, Vice President and Finance Minister Ndaba Gaolathe emphasized priorities such as digitization, agricultural commercialization, and revitalization of state-owned enterprises. He highlighted Botswana’s potential to become a significant player in the automotive industry and a regional logistics and manufacturing hub.
AfDB’s Director General for Southern Africa, Leila Mokaddem, expressed the Bank’s commitment to supporting Botswana’s development goals in line with Vision 2036. The Bank outlined initiatives including the Governance and Economic Resilience Programme (GERSP), with potential funding up to $1 billion, and the Lesotho-Botswana Water Transfer Project to address critical water and sanitation needs. Additional support will focus on transport sector development and energy infrastructure, aiming to bolster Botswana’s economic resilience and private sector growth.
