– Nigeria’s Path to a Low-Carbon Economy
– Inclusive Climate Action Strategies in Nigeria
– Collaborative Efforts for Sustainable Development
On April 16, 2025, the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS) convened a stakeholder workshop in Lagos to advance the development of Nigeria’s Just Transition Guideline. In partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the initiative aims to ensure that the country’s shift to a low-carbon economy is inclusive, equitable, and aligned with national development goals.
Director-General of the NCCCS, Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, emphasized the importance of integrating diverse stakeholder perspectives—including those from government, private sector, labor unions, civil society, and local communities—into the guideline. She highlighted that the Just Transition must not only address technological and policy aspects but also focus on people, livelihoods, and workforce development. The guideline is expected to complement existing policies such as the Energy Transition Plan, Nationally Determined Contributions, and the Climate Change Act, fostering green jobs, skills development, and economic opportunities for all Nigerians.
