The Resource and Environmental Policy Research Centre (REPRC), Environment for Development (EfD) Nigeria, has called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s Fisheries Act to align with global standards and address contemporary challenges. During a workshop in Lagos on April 15, 2025, Prof. Nnaemeka Chukwuone, Director of REPRC, emphasized the need for updated legislation to support sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development.

Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, represented by Mr. Paul Opuama, highlighted that the existing Sea Fisheries Act lacks provisions to address critical issues such as climate change, ecosystem-based management, and global trade compliance. The Ministry is committed to enacting a revised bill that aligns with international obligations, including the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 14.

Mr. Omoragbon Wellington, Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration for the successful implementation of the revised Act and Fisheries Management Plan. This includes integrating local knowledge systems and traditional governance practices to ensure the sustainability of Nigeria’s marine resources for future generations.
