Lagos-REA Renewable Energy Partnership
– Decentralised Solar Power in Lagos
– Sustainable Energy Initiatives in Nigeria
In a significant move towards enhancing sustainable energy access, the Lagos State Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). This collaboration aims to expand decentralised solar power generation and distribution across the state, addressing persistent power challenges and stimulating economic growth.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to renewable energy, highlighting its potential to drive economic activities and improve living standards. The initiative focuses on harnessing sustainable energy sources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote a cleaner, more resilient energy grid.
The partnership also emphasizes the localisation of renewable energy equipment production in Nigeria, with Lagos playing a pivotal role in this strategy. By involving Community Development Associations (CDAs) and Community Development Committees (CDCs), the project aims to ensure that energy solutions are tailored to the specific needs of local communities, fostering greater engagement and sustainability.
