The Abia State Government has initiated an ambitious urban renewal agenda aimed at transforming Umuahia into a modern smart city. This comprehensive plan includes the development of a new 2,000-hectare city, relocation of markets, and infrastructure enhancements to improve urban living standards.
Key Initiatives:
– New Umuahia City Development: A 2,000-hectare area is designated for the creation of a new city, intended to alleviate congestion in the current city center and provide modern amenities for residents.
– Market Relocation: The Isigate market traders are being relocated to a new site at Umunze-Okwulaga Afara to restore order and facilitate urban planning.
– Infrastructure Upgrades: Plans are underway to expand Library Avenue (Bank Road) into a dual-lane road with proper drainage, enhancing access to the Government House and improving traffic flow.
– Standardization of Building Projections: The government is enforcing uniform building projections across Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia, allowing extensions up to 1.5 meters to ensure architectural consistency.
