According to a recent report by the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Africa’s natural gas consumption is expected to rise to 183 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2025. This growth is attributed to increased demand in power generation, industrial applications, and residential usage across the continent.

The GECF’s Global Gas Outlook 2050 highlights that Africa’s gas demand stood at 181 bcm as of the second quarter of 2024, indicating a steady upward trend. This projection underscores the continent’s growing reliance on natural gas as a key energy source.

In Nigeria, the National Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) reported a significant decrease in petrol imports, dropping from 44.6 million litres in August 2024 to 14.7 million litres by April 13, 2025. This reduction is largely due to increased contributions from local refineries, reflecting a shift towards domestic energy production
