Flood Risks in Nigeria: NEMA’s Urgent Alert
Prepare for Floods: NEMA Issues Warning for 7 States
BY SHEKWOPEYELO
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a flood alert for seven states in central and southern Nigeria. The states affected are Benue, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Imo, Rivers, and Bayelsa. This warning comes after recent floods and rising water levels in the River Benue and River Niger.
NEMA Director-General Mrs. Zubaida Umar emphasized the need for preparedness to mitigate flood risks. She highlighted the severe impacts of previous floods, including loss of life, displacement, and extensive damage to property.
Key preventive measures include clearing blocked drainages, constructing temporary barriers, and relocating from flood-prone areas to higher ground. NEMA advises residents to stay updated through weather alerts from NiMet and NIHSA, avoid crossing flooded areas, and cooperate with local emergency services.
The agency is coordinating with state emergency bodies to ensure effective rescue and relief operations. Early action and community vigilance are crucial in reducing the impact of potential floods.
