ABUJA, September 5, 2024 — The National Economic Council (NEC) has instructed all Nigerian states to submit detailed reports of damage caused by recent flooding by Monday, September 9, 2024. This directive aims to assess the extent of the destruction and plan for necessary support.

During the NEC meeting held on September 4, Vice President Kashim Shettima presided over the discussions, which included a comprehensive review of the flooding’s impact. The meeting was briefed by Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, who highlighted that recent data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) shows significant losses: lives lost, extensive damage to farmlands, and widespread displacement.

The flood committee has been reconstituted with members including the governors of Kogi, Oyo, Ebonyi, Bauchi, Bayelsa, and Jigawa states, along with key officials from the Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Environment, and other relevant agencies.

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State acknowledged the Federal Government’s support of N3 billion to assist flood victims. He noted that the flood’s impact has been severe, particularly in the North East, where vital transportation routes and local infrastructures have been affected.

The NEC has emphasized the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments to address the flooding’s aftermath and ensure food security. States must provide an inventory of damages to facilitate effective response and support.
