UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell met with Nigerian civil society organizations (CSOs) in Abuja to discuss climate action and Nigeria’s third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0). The session, hosted by UNDP Nigeria, emphasized the need for collaboration to implement effective climate policies.

Stiell highlighted the importance of transparency, accountability, and financing in achieving climate goals, stressing that Nigeria’s economic growth is linked to its climate leadership. He noted that investing in renewable energy and sustainable agriculture could create economic opportunities and attract foreign investments.

Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, Director General of the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS), recognized CSOs as key players in climate action, advocating for grassroots inclusion in national policies. CSO representative Dr. Mike Terungwa raised concerns about Nigeria’s delayed NDC submissions and called for clear accountability measures and accessible climate finance. The engagement underscored the critical role of partnerships in advancing Nigeria’s climate commitments and achieving sustainable development.
