New MEPS Standards for ACs

Nigeria’s Green Energy Initiatives

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has reaffirmed its commitment to energy efficiency with newly approved Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air conditioners. These standards aim to cut electricity consumption, reduce emissions, and promote sustainability. In collaboration with the UNEP and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the ECN held a stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja to discuss the standards and their benefits.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, ECN’s DG, highlighted that enforcing these regulations will save energy and lower costs for consumers. The MEPS will roll out in phases, targeting a 48% efficiency improvement by 2031. Projections suggest this will save 11.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually by 2040 and cut emissions by 39 million tonnes of CO₂ over 15 years.

To ensure smooth adoption, the ECN plans public awareness campaigns and capacity-building workshops for manufacturers, importers, and consumers. These efforts align with Nigeria’s climate targets and support a sustainable future.
