Sunday Olaniyan, a Nigerian PhD candidate at Baylor University, is leading research into how cells naturally defend against industrial toxins, particularly cadmium. Working at the intersection of molecular biology, environmental health, and public health, his doctoral project investigates how Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay (NMD) helps biological systems manage under heavy metal stress. Olaniyan’s interest in pollution arose from his work in infectious disease research and exposure to heavily impacted communities.
Beyond lab work, Olaniyan also founded Clean Earth Nexus, an initiative engaging students and professionals in practical environmental solutions. His broader goal is to ensure that science and policy work hand in hand: understanding cellular detoxification can lead to safer, bio-based cleanup methods and stronger protections for vulnerable populations exposed to industrial pollution.
