– NESREA clamps down on recyclable, construction & industrial polluters
– Toxic lead, illegal waste practices spark facility shutdowns
– Enforcement of Nigeria’s battery & environmental regulations intensifies
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down 29 facilities across Ogun, Ekiti, and Osun states for various environmental violations. Among those sealed were battery and scrap metal recyclers in Ogijo, Ogun State, whose operations were found to be endangering residents by improperly disposing of hazardous waste—especially lead-laden slag. Facilities were cited for lacking permits, environmental audit reports, proper fume treatment plants, and failing to conduct blood-lead tests on staff.
Shut-downs also affected the construction, quarry, plastic, rubber, foam, food, and automobile industries. Offending facilities lacked essential environmental documents under multiple regulations, failed to install appropriate waste treatment or abatement technology, and ignored provisions such as the Extended Producer Responsibility Programme. The move underscores growing regulatory pressure to ensure compliance, protect public health, and reduce pollution risks in the region.
