– Ogoni biometric cancer screening study launched

– 4,000 Ogoni people to participate in pollution health study
The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), in collaboration with the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has launched a three-year biometric screening study in Ogoniland. Approximately 4,000 participants will have blood samples taken and health data collected to assess the impact of long-term hydrocarbon pollution on cancer risk and other health outcomes.
Project leaders say the initiative builds on recommendations from the 2011 UNEP report, aiming to provide evidence for public health interventions, policy change, and capacity building for local health professionals. Community engagement, transparency, and ethical oversight are emphasized to ensure trust and relevance among the Ogoni population.
