On 16 September 2025, the Nigerian Government, through Minister of Environment Malam Balarabe Lawal, restated its full commitment to remediating environmental degradation in Ogoniland. Speaking at a joint meeting of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) Governing Council and the Board of Trustees of the Ogoni Trust Fund (OTF) in Abuja, Lawal emphasised that these bodies are crucial for accountability and transforming years of environmental neglect into renewed health, sustainability, and prosperity. He called for synergy between the two organizations to align priorities and implement clean-up efforts with transparency, accountability, and urgency, reminding stakeholders that “the world is watching.”

Lawal also highlighted measurable gains since 2023 under HYPREP: progress in addressing legacy pollution, supporting community development, and laying groundwork for sustainable livelihoods. On his part, Mr. Emmanuel Deeyah, Chairman of the OTF’s Board of Trustees, pledged to ensure timely payments to contractors and to discharge the board’s responsibilities diligently so as not to fail the Ogoni people.
